RYA Day Skipper Theory Online Course
The RYA Day Skipper Course is for anyone wishing to learn the theory required to navigate a small craft in familiar waters.
Our RYA Day Skipper Theory Course introduces and builds the student up to a competent level of navigation of a small craft.
The course includes
- position plotting
- allowing for tides
- interpreting lights and shapes used and understanding the rules of the road that apply to all vessels.
- Meteorology is another key area covered in the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course and leads the student to good understanding of the effects of weather systems on vessels at sea.
- Passage planning and other subjects, the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course gives the student a sound base on which to build the navigation skills by experience.

Pre Course Requirements
It is recommended that you have some sailing experience prior to attending a Day Skipper Theory Course, although not mandatory.

You don’t need to bring anything as everything is included 😊
The course is taught over 40 hours with two exam papers. It can be covered as an intensive week-long course, or by distance learning.

the basics of seamanship
the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage
plotting a course to steer
weather forecasting and meteorology
construction, parts, and equipment of a cruising boat
emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets, and liferafts
This course is run online using an interactive website. Our instructors are on hand for any questons you may have during your online course.
