Our navigation and seamanship theory courses are designed to help you unravel the mysteries of navigation, pilotage, passage planning and meteorology. They are great as stand alone courses, but also complement our various practical training courses.
Whether you are a sailor or a motor boater, our shorebased courses equip would-be and experienced skippers with enough knowledge, at least in theory, to go afloat and take charge of a yacht.
Here at Marbella Sailing School we offer Essential Seamanship and Navigation as an Online course
so you can study at home in your own time prior to attending your practical course. Our Day Skipper and Yachtmaster Theory courses are run over 5 days in our training centre just minutes from the beach in Marbella.
essential navigation and seamanship
This course is a basic introduction for anyone looking to spend time on the water.
It introduces the essential knowledge which will allow you to have fun whilst staying safe. This course provides a solid foundation in concepts which later RYA qualifications will expand upon.
It teaches the basic essentials of navigation and chart-reading, how to recognize navigation buoys at sea, how tides and weather forecasts work and how to get started planning routes across the water.
The Essential Navigation and Seamanship course does not assume any previous knowledge of chartwork or boat-handling, making this an ideal course for anyone who is new to the world of navigation or looking to learn the theory essentials to support their practical experience.
As soon as you sign-up, you can log-in and begin your course. Supporting reading materials, charts and navigation tools are dispatched immediately and allow you to experience the concepts on practice-charts.
If you already have some basic understanding of some of these topics and are keen to progress to higher qualifications, we recommend this course as a good starting-point to ensure the foundations of your knowledge are solid before building in the complexities of the science of meteorology and more complex navigation.
The RYA Day Skipper Course is for anyone wishing to learn the theory required to navigate a small craft in home waters.
Our RYA Day Skipper Theory Course introduces and builds the student up to a competent level of navigation of a small craft. The course includes position plotting, allowing for tides, interpreting lights and shapes used and understanding the rules of the road that apply to all vessels.
Meteorology is another key area covered in the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course and leads the student to good understanding of the effects of weather systems on vessels at sea.
Along with passage planning and other subjects, the RYA Day Skipper Theory Course gives the student a sound base on which to build the navigation skills by experience.
