RYA yachtmaster offshore

The RYA Yachtmaster™ Offshore Certificate of Competence is recognised and respected around the world.

An RYA Yachtmaster™ needs a wealth of knowledge, not only to cope with plain sailing or motor cruising but also to be able to cope in demanding situations.

An RYA Yachtmaster™ Certificate of Competence is often the ultimate aim of aspiring skippers.  It is a well known, highly respected qualification worldwide, proving your experience and competence as a skipper.  Unlike other courses in the cruising programme, there is no formal training to complete in order to become a Yachtmaster™. Instead, provided that you have sufficient experience and seatime, you can put yourself forward for an exam to test your skills and knowledge.

Most Yachtmaster™ candidates choose to book themselves into an RYA training centre for some tailor-made tuition to prepare them for the exam.  This is not compulsory but if you have not previously undertaken any formal training it is unlikely that you will pass the exam.

For full details of the Yachtmaster™ Certificate of Competence and how to take your exam, click here.

The exam will include an assessment of your skippering skills, boat handling, general seamanship, navigation, safety awareness and knowledge of the IRPCS, meteorology and signals.

Course Content

In our experience most candidates require some level of preparation prior to taking the exam.  This enables you to familiarise yourself with the yacht on which you will be examined and also gives you the opportunity to develop good working relations with your crew and other candidates.  Please be honest in your appraisal of your skill level.  If you are already confident in all the areas outlined above and have a good knowledge of the International Regulations for Prevention of Collisions at Sea, then a 4 day preparation week prior to the exam may prove sufficient.  If you have any weak areas or gaps in your theory knowledge there will not be time to teach you during the preparation week.  This should be viewed as an opportunity to “polish” your skills.  If you feel that you would benefit from some further training prior to your exam then we suggest booking a one week “Skills Improvement” course prior to the YM prep week.  Please contact us for information as this will be tailored to your individual needs.

Early in the week the instructor will asses your strengths and weaknesses and coach you in the areas required to pass the examination however our experience normally leads us to work on the following areas; passage planning, man overboard recovery, close quarters handling, skippering techniques, navigation in restricted visibility, pilotage and knowledge of the International Collision Regulations.  The instructor will debrief you fully as the week progresses and ensure that you get time to work on those weaker areas however he will also be honest in his appraisal go your skills and if he doesn’t think you are up to the standard required by the examiner he wont hesitate to tell you.
